Convergence and globalization processes have led the world's audiovisual markets to undergo rapid change. Small-scale audiovisual industries, which are critical to the sustainable development of national cultures, are also experiencing new challenges and uncertainties due to rapid changes in business models, emerging global competitors and new European market regulations. Although Europe's long-term policy goals have been focused on strengthening the audiovisual industries here, the new market design instruments of the digital age can often conflict with each other, change the structure of the audiovisual markets, and have the potential to damage the media industries of small countries. The project examines emerging regulations aimed at strengthening supply and demand for European audiovisual products, and their impact on the media industries and markets of small European nation states. The focus is on the evolution and sustainability of the media systems and industries of small countries in the developing common market of the European Union.

The aim of the project is to start with preliminary research and international cooperation that will lead into a large-scale international research project with external funding. Topic-wise, the aim of the project is to develop a better understanding of media-related startups in the context of new technologies, increased platformization, and internationalization. With media-related startups we mean: start ups that are built on innovations in content creation for digital screens (mainly audiovisual, including games) as well as innovations in terms of service applications and technological solutions for digital media. For our study, this includes the startups that have undergone and that currently undergo the programs offered by the Estonian incubator DIGIX and accelerators STORYTEK as well as the pre-incubator StarterTallinn. Detail questions for the proposed study include: What is the trend in terms of business models of these start ups (Business model in terms of value provision) and how can this be explained by current trends in platformization, globalization and technology. This includes: A) To what extent regard the business models content vs. platform innovations? B) What role does technology play in business model innovation? C) What role does international market expansion play in business model innovation?
