Introduction

Shion Yokoo is a PhD student and Junior Research Fellow in Cultural Studies at Tallinn University, Estonia. She obtained her BA in dance from Viljandi Culture Academy and MA in semiotics from the University of Tartu. Her master鈥檚 thesis conceptualises antitheatricality as a reaction to conventionalities in performing arts relying on the notion of signs of signs. Continuing the research on antitheatricality, her doctoral dissertation focuses on antitheatricality in contemporary performing arts in Estonia and Japan from the semiotic approach.
Shion is also active as a contemporary performing artist. Her recent works include a solo production titled 鈥淎nti-Theatricality鈥檚 Appearances in the Estonian Contemporary Performing Arts鈥, an installation 鈥淧lease Water when I am not Here鈥 for the festival 鈥1000 Kurge鈥, and a performative installation 鈥淧eal kiri peal鈥 with Keisuke Sugawara as a part of the main programme of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024.
