The case study is one of the most important research designs in many social scientific fields, but much disagreement exists about how they contribute to the general understanding of social phenomena. I will discuss how the idea of mechanism-based theorizing provides a fruitful basis for understanding one key way in which case studies expand our understanding of the social world. I will illustrate the idea with some examples from recent sociological research.

Speaker: Petri Ylikoski, Professor of Sociology (University of Helsinki). Petri Ylikoski is a professor of Sociology (Science and Technology Studies) at the University of Helsinki. His research interests include theories of explanation and evidence, science studies, and social theory. His current research focuses on the foundations of mechanism-based social science, institutional epistemology, and the social consequences of artificial intelligence.

Moderator: Benjamin Klasche (PhD) is a Lecturer of Politics and International Relations at Tallinn University.
Discussants: Raivo Vetik and Triin Lauri. Raivo Vetik is a Distinguished Professor of Comparative Politics and Triin Lauri is an Associate Professor of Public Policy.
