Call for Papers “Populism For, Against, or By the Minorities? Social Groups in Populism Research”
The SIDESTREAM project is organizing a conference at Tallinn University on June 5–6, 2025, titled: “Populism For, Against, or By the Minorities? Social Groups in Populism Research”

The conference will examine the relationships between populism and social groups. Under what conditions and how are minorities incorporated into “the people”? Why are some groups embraced, while others are turned into scapegoats? When and how can minority groups break out of scapegoat status and become the “good minority”? Under what conditions, and why, do populist actors facilitate this process? What political consequences result from such discursive shifts?
To address these and other questions, the conference will explore how populist actors engage with women, LGBTQI+ individuals, persons with migration backgrounds, ethnic, racial, and religious minorities, as well as youth.
